The Monte Rosa is our ‘home mountain’. Just a few minutes drive from Rassa you arrive at the base of the Natural Park Alta Valsesia. The Monte Rosa, 4643m, is the second highest mountain in Europe. It is part of The Pennine Alps and situated on the border between Italy and Switzerland.
The fascinating story of Fra Dolcino is one of the literary symbols most closely linked to our mountains. Fra Dolcino (1250-1307) was a preacher described as a heretic inspired by the Franciscan theories. He was the second leader of the Dulcinian reformist movement and was burned at the stake in 1307. He had taken over the movement after its founder, Gerard Segarelli, had also been executed in 1300 on the orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Fra Dolcino lived with his companion Margherita and his followers for the last two years on the top of an inaccessible mountain near the village of Rassa, The Calva Wall (La Parete Calva).
